Cotton Ceiling Experiences

For those who do not know, the Cotton Ceiling is a term developed by Drew DeVeaux to talk about the experience trans* women encounter in various queer and sexual liberation communities – while our participation in progressive communities as social and activist members is accepted (sometimes tentatively so), trans* women participation as romantic and sexual members of the community is often fraught with systematic, individual, and cultural challenges and oppressions.  As an effort to start a dialog about our experiences, Morgan M Page is hosting a conversation at an upcoming Planned Parenthood Confrence in Toronto about the Cotton Ceiling and how trans women can overcome some of the challenges facing our sexual empowerment and sexual liberation.  Of course, this desire by trans* women to engage in dialog about the cultural influences which impact our sexual agency has been taken by the anti-trans radfems to mean trans women are wanting to engage in non-consensual sex acts with their dear, precious, vulnerable cis lesbians.  But then, radfems try to equate anything trans women do to rape.

Selenelion

Today there was a once in a life time experience visible along western North America, eastern and central Europe, and north eastern Africa. People in those areas would have been able to step out their homes and witness a selenelion.

A selenelion is when both the Sun and the eclipsed Moon can be observed in the sky at the same time. It can only happen near Moonrise/Sunset or Moonset/Sunrise. While this event occurs with every Lunar eclipse, it can be rare to be a personal witness to one.

This morning, in the cold of a Colorado winter, I stood at a crossroads. I watched an eclipsing Moon set behind the Rocky Mountains while the sun rose behind me. One does not have to be religious to still find personal, psycho-symbolic meaning in the events of our lives. The art is learning how to share these personal meanings without forcing them on others – a problem far too common with religion.

Witnessing an event such as a selenelion can carry a very special meaning for some people. For myself, I see it as a time of letting go the things I no longer need in my life. Releasing the mental and emotional burdens which weigh me down – apprehension, fear, hopelessness – and turning and embracing the things which bring wonder, joy and warmth into my life.

What are the mental and emotional things are holding you back from playing the sort of game or having the sort of lifestyle *you* want to enjoy? Do they continue to have a healthy, constructive purpose in your life? Or is it time to let those things go? Is it instead time to turn and clasp the star of your hopes, dreams, and wishes, bringing to you its warmth and joy into your life?

Yes, I am still alive

But sort of barely.

This semester is sort of being a culmination of everything going on in my life. I am taking five classes, and the reading level is intense. And this year’s Creating Change conference has left me way behind.

I need a better way to keep in touch with of the people I care for here.

Writer's Block: Sticks and stones

[Error: unknown template qotd]

When a person has grown up with daily harassment and verbal abuse from peers and family members, how do they pick just one incident or one insult? Do I pick the word my grandfather called me which may have caused me to ignore and suppress thoughts or questions about my own gender identity for so much of my life? Do I pick the word my peers decided to use against me which caused me shame and guilt about aspects of sexuality? Do I pick the terms and phrases which continue cause me to question my own self worth and doubt my ability to accomplish?

A word, slur or comment that was used one day, which might not have been a big issue, can steamroll and become so much better when used en masse.

Reading through many of the comments to this question, I found my self thinking,"If that is the worst you've ever been called, consider yourself fortunate."

blog post for The Center

as part of my internship at The Center I have been writing blog posts for their blog over on Wordpress.

signal boosting

[livejournal.com profile] bifemmefatale's daughter has run away from home. She is traveling between states on her own. I am re-posting this here. The original post is here. Please pass this on:

This is my daughter Morgan. She's 16 and she ran away from home yesterday. Friends say she hopped a Megabus to the Carbondale, IL area to attend the upcoming Rainbow Gathering Oct. 1. She may change her destination if she knows she is being looked for. She's supposedly traveling with 2 guys named Tim and Josh, both Caucasian, early 20s or late teens, one with a "cholo tear" tattoo near his eye. She's 5'5", 120#, reddish-blonde hair, long bangs and sidelocks, short in back, always wears her jean vest with studs and patches on it. She may be begging for spare change. If you see her, *please* contact me ( bifemmefatale@livejournal.com ) and the police! 16 is too young to be running around the country on her own. I'm very worried for her safety. Thanks in advance.

ETA: her dad says she left her pack with him, so all she has is what she was wearing: the vest in the pic, a Cannibal Corpse hoodie, a black lace-trimmed cami, jeans and ankle-length black leather boots.

We all write like white people...

...and most of us write like white men.

Have you noticed this?

I've noticed that this "I write like..." meme has been sweeping through my friend's page again. While I briefly entertained myself briefly with comparing some of my own differing writing styles, I really was not inspired with commenting about it until this morning.

It seems that all the results people are coming up with are white writers. And most of them are men.

*sigh*

Isn't it time our lists of "great writers" be expanded to include more women and people of color?

I would like to thank [livejournal.com profile] sophiaserpentia for bringing this to my attention this morning. In addition, I would like to point out to the posts by Tea Berry-Blue - We All Write Like White Men and Rhetorically Constructed, or: We All Write Like White Men, Part 2 - as my sources for further information on this.

Surgery no longer a requirement for changing gender on passport

Wow. This is huge. I mean, beyond just huge. Like I cannot even begin to explain how big of a deal this is, particularly when coming from a Federal agency. Like OMG, I never saw this coming.

Admittedly, it's not the end all, be all perfect or ideal solution many in the trans activism would like to see*, but it is a heck of a lot better than was required previously or what many of us feared might happen.

* which, for myself, would be the elimination of a gender marker on things like passports, driver's licenses and identification cards. I mean, seriously, what purpose do they serve, other than possibly to protect from some imagined trans menace?

Anyway link to CNN article.

Anyone know what this plant is?

It decided to start blooming last night. What I thought were developing seed pods were actually buds. Is it a weed? Is it something else?

I think I have realized who our (trans people) greatest enemies are

It's not the right wing or the conservatives. While they my have wealth and power and the ability to stifle our voices, at least they are up front with their hatred, prejudice and bigotry of us.

No, it seems our real enemies are those who would claim to be our allies. Or at least claim to not be transphobic. While continuing to use problematic language and promote problematic attitudes.

I would rather they just come out an say it. To these people I say:

If you want to be transphobic, then fine, just fess up to it. Openly admit that you feel your views on language and language use are superior and should be privileged over people who have PhDs and have published books and academic papers on the topic. State that you don't care about the history of violence and harassment against trans people, and trans people don't deserve any sort of respectful or considerate use of language.

Because, at least with the conservatives and the people who have the courage to admit to their bigotry and prejudice we know where we stand. We know where the battle lines are drawn, and we know not to waste our time, effort, energy and resources trying to "educate" them. These people won't listen, and that is fine. We know to focus our efforts elsewhere or through other means.

If people want to be transphobic, cool. Tell me now so I know my enemy up front. But don't claim to not be transphobic while ignoring requests to cut the problematic crap. Because that hypocrisy. And it saps the energy from the work that is being done.

I guess...

...even in feminist/anti-oppression spaces it's easier to dehumanize people with simplistic labels rather than actually engage them in conversation.

Chaging settings

I've decided to make my journal "friends only". I apologize to those who may have been following my entries anonymously. I may make an occasional entry public, but it is difficult to say at this point.

Black Wings

[livejournal.com profile] io_spellweaver found this today.

Black Wings by ~o0-Pyromancer-0o on deviantART

I am no one to normally buy artwork. Most people who know me in person know that my walls tend to be rather bare. I would buy this.
I suspect a few readers might understand why.
